Awaking from Hibernation

Spring is finally here and I can’t wait to get out in the dirt. Every year I do a small French inspired kitchen garden (potager) and have been slowly adding to my flower beds each year. We have only been in our current home a few years and there were no established garden beds with the exception of three beautiful roses. Starting to landscape and fill beds gets very pricey. I refuse to pay the cost of new flowers and have been filling my flower beds with plants from my mother, sisters and friends. I recommend doing this to save money and to get plants in your area that are already hardy to the environment. Also remember you can split flowers you already have that are getting to large and move to areas that need to be filled.

In March I started my seeds for the vegetable garden. They are all sitting on the kitchen table and are about ready to be transplanted outside. Each year I grow a variety of vegetables such as tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, peppers and herbs. My children love picking fresh food from their own yard and nothing tastes as good as a fresh tomato with salt and pepper!

My list of things to accomplish in the yard is ever growing. I am hoping to get a load of mulch and plan to add a walkway to my secret garden. I also have plans to landscape more around my garage and parking area. The first thing to do is to get my vegetable beds worked up and my little plants put in the ground. I challenge you to grow something this year. Even having tomatoes on the porch is rewarding and fun. I had let go of the worry of having a garden big enough to can food for the winter. I would love to do this, but working full-time has limits and I choose to just let my garden be fun and enjoyable. I wish you the best in your garden!
